In this New Year let's start January off by recognizing Cervical Cancer Awareness! Cervical Health Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about how women can protect themselves from HPV (human papillomavirus) and cervical cancer. According to the CDC there are over 42 million currently infected with HPV types that cause disease. About 13 million Americans, including teens, become infected each year. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease.

HPV is a major cause of cervical cancer. Many people with HPV don’t know they are infected. And each year, more than 14,480 women in the United States be diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer. About 4,290 women will die from cervical cancer.

The good news...

-The HPV vaccine (shots) can prevent HPV.

-Cervical cancer can often be prevented with regular screening tests (called Pap tests) and follow-up care.
